Trail Overview
Set within a high-elevation coniferous forest of firs and pines interspersed with open timber clearings in the Tahoe National Forest, Verdi Peak Spur (FS 0072-024) offers a quiet backcountry mountain detour. Accessed directly off of main Verdi Peak Road (FS 0072) near the summit crest, this 1.2-mile single-lane out-and-back dirt spur ascends along mountain contours to provide access to several secluded campsites. Backcountry campers and off-roaders frequently travel this path to establish primitive campsites, enjoy peaceful forest settings, or explore high-country terrain adjacent to the historic Verdi Peak Lookout area. The road surface consists of a narrow single-lane dirt track that begins smooth before transitioning into a rockier, steeper grade toward the end, earning a gentle Grade 2 difficulty rating. Departing the main access road, the track begins as a smooth single-vehicle dirt path featuring occasional pullouts for passing or camping. Multiple primitive camp turnouts appear along the route as it climbs. The final pitch ascends a steeper dirt slope embedded with small loose rocks before concluding at an elevated camping turnaround at 1.2 miles.
Difficulty
Earning an accessible Grade 2 difficulty rating, this 1.2-mile mountain spur features a predictable single-lane dirt surface with minimal technical challenges. Early sections are smooth and level, while the upper portion introduces loose surface stones, small embedded rocks, and a brief steep incline. Standard vehicles can comfortably traverse the entire spur during dry conditions. Drivers should maintain a steady, controlled speed on the final climb, keep wheels centered along the firmest dirt path, and utilize established roadside turnouts to yield if encountering oncoming traffic.
