Trail Overview
The Verdi Lookout trail begins as you turn off Forest Road 72/Verdi Peak onto Verdi Lookout. The route quickly gains elevation, switchbacking through the forested mountains of the Tahoe National Forest. As you climb, stunning views open up of Boca and Stampede Reservoirs below, along with glimpses of the Sierra crest. The trail is a rough dirt road with rocky sections, making it quite bumpy. Overall, the terrain is moderately challenging, though a few spots require careful line choice and some thoughtful navigation. Near the top, the road splits: one branch leads to Ladybug Peak, while the other continues to Verdi Peak. At the summit area, you'll find a small parking spot near the historic fire lookout tower (now abandoned). From here, a short hike takes you to the top for breathtaking 360-degree views, and on clear days, you can see Reno in the distance, along with the surrounding lakes. The fire lookout has been abandoned for many years, but you can still get up there and see for miles. This trail gets early snow and holds snow late into the spring or even early summer. Keep this in mind if you are determined to make it to the peak.
Difficulty
For the most part, this is just a bumpy dirt road; however, near the top, you will encounter a couple of rock sections that will require some thought in a lower stock rig. Keep in mind that this is high elevation, and snow can stay late into the spring and show up again as early as September.
History
Verdi Peak Lookout was constructed in 1983, replacing earlier structures. A lookout has been on Verdi Peak since at least 1939.
