Trail Overview

This 4-mile out-and-back route starts and returns to Red Lava - FS 42N03, climbing 281 feet up around Timber Hill. The surface is hard-packed red dirt that can get very dusty at times, staying 1.5 vehicles wide and lined with thick pine trees and manzanita bushes within the Shasta National Forest. This is an active logging road, so use caution and watch for trucks throughout. Once past the active logging area, around 1.25 miles in, the trail narrows and becomes more overgrown, and you'll pick up pinstripes from the manzanita bushes here. The trail ends at a field of volcanic rocks. Most of the route is easy going, but the last quarter mile brings off-camber sections and uneven surfaces that require extra attention.
