Trail Overview

Branching off main Forest Road 48N13 in the Trapper Point vicinity, Trapper Point Spur A (FS 48N13A) extends as a short, untamed out-and-back forest spur. The route passes through a quiet, mixed-conifer woodland featuring incense cedars, Douglas firs, and dense, brushy undergrowth within the Klamath National Forest. Backcountry explorers and hunters primarily venture down this secluded path seeking solitude, wildlife watching, or access toward surrounding high-country ridgelines near the Red Buttes Wilderness and Pacific Crest Trail corridor. The entrance marker post is partially obscured by overhanging foliage, requiring drivers to keep a keen eye out when locating the turnoff. The driving surface consists of a narrow, little-used dirt and gravel spur holding a Grade 2 difficulty rating due to heavy vegetation encroachment. Starting on a level, hard-packed bed, the track stays relatively flat with minimal elevation change, but becomes progressively overgrown until thick brush renders the far end completely impassable.

Difficulty

Carrying a Grade 2 difficulty rating, this quiet mountain spur features a flat, smooth foundation but presents significant vegetation narrowings. Technical off-road challenges like deep mud trenches, large boulder steps, or steep shelf drop-offs are absent. The primary hazard stems from dense foliage and stiff brush sweeping across the right-of-way, restricting forward sightlines and heavily squeezing vehicle clearance. Proceeding at a cautious, low speed helps protect side paint from stray branches and allows time to execute a turnaround before the roadbed terminates into impenetrable thickets. Standard factory ground clearance is sufficient to clear the dirt tread, though low-slung foliage limits travel near the end.
