Trail Overview
Texas Flat (FS 6S038) is a trail with a split personality, luring drivers in with a gentle start before revealing its true colors. Beginning near the popular Texas Flat Campground, the route starts as a wide, easy forest service road off of Greys Mountain Road (FS 6S028). It starts off as suitable for almost any vehicle, winding through a scenic, healthy pine forest. However, as the trail climbs northward toward the ridge, the character shifts dramatically. The track gets progressively narrower, shedding its "easy" rating as it constricts into a tight, technical chute. Near the top, the trail transforms into a Rated 4 challenge, defined by deep erosion ruts that force drivers to negotiate awkward off-camber lines and test their suspension articulation. It’s a perfect progression trail: a relaxing cruise for campers at the bottom, and a rugged test for more advanced drivers and vehicles at the top.
Difficulty
The difficulty rating is driven by the upper section of the trail. While the start is a breezy Rating 1-2, the climb quickly deteriorates into a narrow, rutted technical track. The deep ruts require careful tire placement to avoid high-centering or body damage, and the narrowing path limits line choices, forcing drivers to commit to the rougher terrain. 4-Low and high clearance are mandatory for the upper half to navigate the uneven, eroded surface safely. It is a classic example of a trail that gets harder the further you go.
