Trail Overview

This is a wide, fast, and thoroughly entertaining forest loop that branches off the paved section of Sky Ranch Road (FS 6S010). Sivils Ranch isn't your standard boring fire road; it keeps drivers engaged with a constantly changing surface that shifts between loose gravel, deep silky "moondust" dirt, and sections of chunky embedded rock. The trail winds through a mix of dense pine forest and open chaparral, offering a rhythmic drive interrupted by large water bars and occasional ruts that demand you scrub speed to avoid launching your cooler into the ceiling. The highlight of the route is the expansive view from the Sivils Ranch dispersed campsite, where the trees open up to reveal the rolling Sierra foothills. It’s a perfect "spirited" drive for those who enjoy a bit of flow with their scenery.

Difficulty

This trail earns a Rating 2 because while it is wide and mostly flat, it is definitely not smooth enough for a sedan. The chunky embedded rocks and the large earthen water bars require high clearance to navigate comfortably without bottoming out. The "moondust" dirt sections can hide ruts and rocks, and they offer less traction than gravel, so 4WD is recommended for cornering stability, though 2WD high-clearance vehicles can certainly manage the loop with a capable driver. It’s an easy trail that bites back if you drive too fast.
