Trail Overview
A short, moderately challenging trail that serves as a historic fire break. The route is unmaintained, loose, and bumpy, defined by numerous steep, "punchy climbs" requiring low range and a locker, and descents that feature deep ruts and exposed roots. It is narrow and tight, demanding careful attention to wheel placement.
Difficulty
This trail is moderately challenging due to the combination of steep, loose-dirt punchy climbs and deep ruts. Required a 4-Low transfer case and a rear locker to maintain momentum and traction on the most severely eroded and steep sections. High clearance and 4WD are mandatory. Not recommended for stock low-clearance SUVs.
History
This route's name, Speckerman Fuel Break, is a historic designation given to strategically maintained strips of land designed to contain and control wildfires. This trail serves as one such vital fire defense line in the Sierra National Forest.
