Trail Overview

Swift Creek - FS 36N25 is a highly accessible, beautifully scenic Forest Service road that reaches the trailheads for the Granite Lake and Swift Creek trails in the Trinity Alps Wilderness. As you meander through the dense, towering pine forest, the trail occasionally opens up to offer sweeping, elevated views of a shallow, winding creek flowing through the valley below. The drive is flat, featuring plenty of convenient turnouts to pause and enjoy the scenery. Along the way, you will cross a sturdy, single-lane bridge over the water and pass through a few wide, cleared areas showcasing recent logging activity and staged equipment. After passing the wide, triangular islands marking the Lake Eleanor Trail intersection, the road concludes at a massive, well-equipped staging area for the Trinity Alps backcountry. This expansive terminus features an upper parking lot, a lower overflow area, and a large designated horse trailer lot complete with a vault toilet, ample turnaround space, and clear "Stock Parking Only" signage. Before setting out on foot, be sure to note the prominent bear safety warnings, and remember that wilderness permits are required if you plan to venture past the trailhead.

Difficulty

Earning a very mild difficulty rating of 2 out of 10, this is a smooth and stress-free drive that is perfectly suited for everyday, lower-clearance daily drivers as long as you take your time. The road surface is predominantly packed dirt and gravel, with the primary challenges being occasional minor potholes, mild bumps, and shallow washboarding. While you will spot some medium-sized, loose rocks scattered along the hillside banks and dirt shoulders, the main travel path remains comfortably wide and consistently clear of major debris. The single-lane bridge is solid and poses no structural challenge, and the grade is gentle enough that you will find a wide variety of standard passenger cars safely parked at the final staging area. Just maintain a slow, steady speed through the occasional potholed sections to protect your undercarriage, and you will easily glide through this beautiful forest route.
