Trail Overview

The overall environment of Deadhorse Creek - FS 37N80Y begins as a pleasant, inviting woodland drive featuring sprawling, peekaboo views of Trinity Lake, but it progressively transforms into a rugged, heavily overgrown hillside track. Starting on a relatively clear and open path flanked by thick blackberry bushes, you will pass a couple of marked, locked gates before the true nature of the trail reveals itself. As the route continues, it clings tightly to the hillside, featuring steep, intimidating drop-offs on one side and continuous signs of landscape shifting on the other. The deeper you travel, the more the forest reclaims the road, culminating in thick, heavy overgrowth and low-hanging vegetation. The trail ultimately comes to a very abrupt halt just before a washout at the North Fork Swift Creek; the track completely disappears into dense bushes without any designated turnaround space, meaning visitors must be prepared to carefully reverse their way out of the terminus.

Difficulty

Earning a solid Grade 3 difficulty rating, the trail surface starts as loose gravel and old, pothole-riddled pavement hidden under sand, before transitioning into a narrow dirt track heavily littered with sharp rocks and broken branches from frequent hillside slides. While the initial stretches are easily manageable, the hazards increase significantly as you proceed. Drivers must carefully navigate around jagged rockslide debris, skirt past thick, encroaching bushes that will inevitably cause pinstriping along the sides of the vehicle, and watch out for large, fallen trees leaning aggressively into the trail space. Because the route concludes in a tight dead-end with absolutely no room to turn around, you must feel entirely comfortable reversing your vehicle along a narrow shelf road bordered by steep drop-offs.
