Trail Overview
The overall environment of Buckeye Creek offers a wonderful, peacefully secluded journey that steadily climbs up into the towering, shaded pine stands of the Shasta National Forest. Starting directly off California Highway 3, this forest service loop initially passes by a few private residences that beautifully maintain their stretch of the route. As you continue to ascend deeper into the woods, the surroundings transition into a wonderfully pristine and quiet forest setting. This route is highly popular for outdoor enthusiasts, as it serves as a primary access point for those heading up to the Boulder Lake Trail within the Trinity Alps Wilderness. Along the way, you will find plenty of spacious turnouts and a handful of secluded, dispersed campsites nestled among the trees, making it a perfect, scenic escape.
Difficulty
Earning a very mild 2 out of 10 difficulty rating, the trail surface begins as heavily laid, loose gray gravel near the residential stretch before softening into a remarkably smooth, packed dirt road. While traversing this route, you will primarily encounter patches of loose gravel, a soft dusting of pine needles, and occasional shallow, dry ruts forming along the edges of the dirt track. There are a few very small, scattered stones on the surface, but the road is wide, wonderfully graded, and virtually free of challenging obstacles. To ensure a pleasant ride, simply maintain a cautious, steady speed through the residential areas to minimize dust and safely manage traction on the loose gravel, and use the wide turnouts to safely yield to any oncoming traffic you might meet on the forest corners.
