Trail Overview
This challenging 5-mile trail is designed for experienced drivers in modified four-wheel-drive vehicles and SxSs looking for a technical crawl with stunning Sierra Nevada views. Starting near the shores of Gold Lake, the route climbs through dense forest and rugged granite terrain, offering panoramic overlooks of Gold Lake and Snake Lake. The trail peaks at an elevation of 7,355 feet, requiring drivers to navigate rock gardens, tight maneuvers, and off-camber sections. High clearance, skid plates, and at least one locker are highly recommended to tackle the persistent rocky obstacles along this route.
As the trail winds past Little Gold Lake and Summit Lake, it transitions near Oakland Pond before beginning a steep, punishing descent toward Snake Lake. This final descent is exceptionally rocky and demands precise wheel placement and careful throttle control. Green-sticker vehicles are permitted on designated routes, but riders must watch for hikers and mountain bikers where the trail runs near the Pacific Crest Trail. Dispersed camping is restricted to designated sites only, making Gold Lake or nearby campgrounds the best options for overnight stays.
