Trail Overview

This 3.5-mile point-to-point trail connects Sheep Camp Butte to Lower Klamath Road, traveling through a meadow environment flanked by volcanic lava bed ridges. The trail surface consists of loose dirt with occasional small to medium volcanic rocks, some of which can appear unexpectedly since overgrown vegetation often hides them from view, requiring heightened awareness while driving. The route is surrounded by a meadow of short bushes and tall grasses that run between the volcanic lava bed ridges, creating a distinctive landscape. This grass and bush growth has overgrown into the median of the trail itself, adding to the technical nature of navigation. The trail climbs up and down a few small ridge lines throughout its length, creating varied terrain as it winds through the volcanic landscape. The north section of the trail can be particularly difficult to follow at times due to overgrown vegetation obscuring the route, making route finding a genuine challenge in this area. High clearance is required to navigate the hidden volcanic rocks and overgrown median safely, and four-wheel drive is highly recommended given the combination of loose surface, hidden obstacles, and challenging navigation.
