Trail Overview
RS2477 Cut-Off travels over fine, loose dirt that can become more difficult when wet. The narrow trail has little room for passing, with ruts reaching 6–8 inches deep and frequent whoops measuring 12–14 inches tall. Around 0.7 miles, a wash creates a 20-inch drop and climb that must be crossed.
The route provides continuous views of the surrounding mountain ranges and abundant camping. Around 0.9 miles, several large, level campsites can accommodate up to 20 vehicles each, with excellent mountain views. The trail continues until connecting with Hafen Ranch Road.
Difficulty
This trail is rated Level 2 because of its loose surface, 6–8-inch ruts, repeated 12–14-inch whoops, and the 20-inch wash crossing. The narrow terrain requires careful driving, but the route remains relatively mild overall.
History
The BLM lands south of Pahrump lie along historic travel corridors used by Indigenous peoples for generations and later by Spanish explorers, miners, ranchers, and settlers crossing the Mojave Desert. Portions of the nearby Old Spanish Trail became an important 19th-century trade route connecting settlements in New Mexico with Southern California, leaving the region with a long history of desert travel and exploration.
