Trail Overview
Branching gently off Tatham Ridge, Rocky Cabin Spring - FS 24N40 offers an inviting 1.4-mile interconnected route that winds through the high-elevation Mendocino National Forest. Traversing a subalpine landscape recovering from the 2020 August Complex Wildfire, the area features standing charred timber blended with vibrant meadows carpeted in colorful summer wildflowers. The road begins with a slight descent on a smooth, hard-packed earth and crushed rock surface. Shortly along the trail lies Rocky Camp, a charming campsite featuring a natural piped spring, picnic table, and fire ring set against sweeping valley backdrop views. Continuing onward, travelers pass a single flat clearing at mile 0.3 before reaching another natural spring at mile 1.1 surrounded by tiger lilies. The trail concludes at mile 1.4, providing seamless throughput into the surrounding Forest Service road system.
Difficulty
This single-lane dirt road remains exceptionally well-maintained with minimal erosion or terrain challenges. The surface remains mostly smooth and level, with only a minor 12-inch washout near Rocky Camp that can be easily navigated without special off-road techniques. Standard low-clearance vehicles can comfortably manage the mild grades and gentle turns under dry conditions.
