Trail Overview
This 1.6-mile point-to-point trail serves as a strategic shortcut linking the Ragwort - FS 44N12 and Purple Pit - FS 44N22Y trails. It winds through a healthy, mature stand of pine trees within the Klamath National Forest. For the majority of the route, the path is exceptionally smooth, featuring a surface of dirt layered with pine needles and cones. While the trail has been recently cleared, the western terminus presents more rugged conditions, characterized by tighter corridors and overhanging branches. The route is a fantastic spot for wildlife viewing; keep your eyes peeled for wild turkeys and deer, which are frequently spotted in this quiet section of the forest.
Difficulty
Despite the smooth nature of the main segment, this is a rating 3 trail due to the obstacles near the terminus. A high-clearance vehicle is mandatory; you will encounter a log across the path that must be traversed, and the trail becomes increasingly tight near the Ragwort junction. Although much of the route has been cleared, expect some encroaching vegetation, including overhanging branches on the west side and small brush in the center median. The final 1/8 mile approaching the Ragwort intersection is significantly tighter and less developed than the rest of the shortcut, requiring attentive driving to navigate without brush contact.
