Trail Overview

Front Line Road is in the San Bernardino National Forest just south of Big Bear Lake. It provides a casual meandering trail run alongside a shallow canyon formed by the 8,000-foot San Bernardino Mountain Range to the north and the 10,000-foot San Gorgonio Wilderness mountains to the south. There are numerous places to pull over for lunch or to take in the many commanding views of the mountains and tall pines that guide your way.

Difficulty

Front Line Road comprises hard-packed sandy dirt and is well-maintained and graded flat but because of flooding in the winter, it could be a bit rutted out. There are no obstacles, and it is wide enough for two vehicles to pass easily in most places. The trail suits any driver's experience level using a high-clearance SUV.

The route is super easy and fairly open—full-size pickups won’t even get brushed by branches. The surface is mostly sand and dirt, and honestly I don’t think you even need to air down. Any regular SUV can handle it, and even a sedan could make it through if you just take it slow over the rough patches.

Very easy, fun and flowing trail. While it's posted online as closed, there was no closed gate or posted warning.

Super easy trail. No one goes on this trail perhaps due to that. It's about 10 miles long and can be done in about 30mins. The trail head to get to it takes 4x as long. generally smooth and can be ridden fast and hard. During snow conditions an AWD/4x4 is needed. But will be no issue with a 2wd in dry condition. It is very cold so bring medium weight gear like a wind breaker and thin jacket. Bring full gewr in the winter as it's extremely cold and may get into the single digits especially at night. BEARS AND COUGARS ARE PRESENT!
