Trail Overview
Winding along a high, exposed ridge recovering from the massive 2018 Ranch Fire, with chaparral growth and standing snags in the Mendocino National Forest, Pinnacle Rock (FS 16N01D) offers a brief but visually rewarding mountain excursion. Accessed directly off Pilot Grove Road (FS 16N01), this short out-and-back spur climbs a panoramic ridgeline near Pinnacle Rock. Outdoor enthusiasts and campers primarily travel this scenic route to reach exceptional primitive camping spots, enjoy sunset vistas over the valley, and take in spectacular stargazing opportunities. The trail surface consists of a smooth, single-track dirt road with gentle gradients and minimal rockiness, earning an easy Grade 1 difficulty rating. Upon departing the main road, the spur immediately passes a spacious pullout campsite featuring commanding views. As the track continues its mild uphill climb along the spine of the ridge, additional campsite turnouts appear. Near 0.5 miles, the pathway narrows between natural rock outcrops and low manzanita brush that may lightly brush vehicle sides. The drive culminates at a dramatic summit point providing breathtaking, nearly 360-degree panoramic views of Clear Lake and the surrounding mountain ranges, featuring limited space ideal for a single vehicle turnaround.
Difficulty
Earning an easy Grade 2 difficulty rating, this short ridge spur features a firm, well-graded dirt surface with minimal elevation change. Technical obstacles, deep ruts, and clearance-testing boulders are entirely absent along the entire 0.6-mile climb. Near the 0.5-mile mark, encroaching manzanita bushes and natural rock formations narrow the right-of-way slightly, presenting a mild pinstriping hazard for wider vehicles. Drivers should maintain a gentle, controlled speed, stay centered on the dirt track, and proceed cautiously through the narrow brush near the top before turning around in the compact clearing at the viewpoint.
