Trail Overview

This short point-to-point route serves as an efficient and scenic shortcut connecting the Bonito Butte area with Gold Digger Pass. The trail traverses a healthy, vibrant section of the Modoc National Forest, characterized by thick stands of pine trees interspersed with patches of sagebrush. As you proceed, the landscape opens up into a large, expansive meadow dominated by sagebrush, which marks the site of the historic, now-dried-up Panhandle Lake. The remnants of the lake are clearly visible as a sweeping grassy basin, providing a distinct geographic landmark that contrasts with the surrounding pine forest. It is a quiet, pleasant drive that captures the diverse transition of the local high-desert ecosystem.

Difficulty

This is a straightforward, rating 2 trail that is generally easy to navigate. The surface consists primarily of loose dirt with scattered rocks, though the route is not technically demanding. Drivers will encounter some small, shallow drainage ruts at the northern end of the trail, all of which remain under 6 inches in depth. The primary consideration for this route is the presence of overgrown vegetation within the center median; to prevent undercarriage contact and ensure a comfortable transit, a high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended. The trail is well-defined, and while the surface is loose, it poses no significant obstacles to a standard high-clearance rig.
