Trail Overview
Old State Road South begins as a wide, graded dirt road and winds its way upward through a series of switchbacks toward the mountains, delivering some of the most dramatic views in the area. Lake Isabella spreads out below as the trail climbs, with the surrounding canyon and valley filling in the broader panorama. The shelf road character is consistent throughout, with large drop-offs into the canyon below keeping the exposure prominent despite the approachable rating. The sustained climb of 1,500 feet over 5 miles via numerous switchbacks gives the trail a scenic and immersive character that rewards patience behind the wheel.
Difficulty
The wide graded dirt surface and two vehicle width make this accessible to highway legal vehicles of most sizes. The primary consideration is the shelf road exposure with large canyon drop-offs, which demands steady attention, particularly through the switchback sections. No significant technical obstacles are present. Highway legal vehicles only are permitted on this route.
