Trail Overview
This narrow, fine-dirt trail has little room for vehicles to pass. Ruts begin around 4 inches deep, and within the first 0.1 miles, a handful of level, shaded campsites can accommodate up to five vehicles each. Around 0.7 miles, the route climbs a hill with 14–16 inch ruts and 5–8 inch ledges. 4WD or AWD is recommended but not required. The soft dirt can become considerably more difficult when wet.
Difficulty
This trail is rated Level 3 because of the hill climb, 14–16 inch ruts, and 5–8 inch ledges. 4WD or AWD is recommended, particularly in wet conditions.
History
Inyo National Forest was established in 1907 and today protects a vast section of the Eastern Sierra surrounding Mammoth Lakes. The area has a long history of Native American use, mining, ranching, and recreation, while its dramatic landscape was shaped by volcanic activity, glaciers, and the uplift of the Sierra Nevada.
