Trail Overview
While the entire road stretches for roughly 12 miles, this specific adventure covers the upper 7.5-mile unpaved segment as it climbs gently toward Chapman Saddle. This is a classic, highly scenic Forest Service road, featuring a wide, well-maintained path framed by towering pine trees that offer wonderful shade and a peaceful atmosphere along the journey. The graded gravel and dirt surface is exceptionally smooth for the majority of the drive, making it a fun, relaxing route where you can comfortably carry a little bit of speed. As you take in the forest sights, keep an eye out for a great, wide-open dispersed camping opportunity along the way. While the trail is largely pristine, the final quarter mile does introduce a slightly bumpier ride with scattered, small embedded rocks and occasional shallow mud puddles to navigate.
Difficulty
Earning a very mild difficulty rating of 2 out of 10, this scenic forest route is exceptionally smooth and accessible for a wide variety of users. There are no steep drop-offs, intimidating ledges, or highly technical sections to worry about here. The primary challenges are simply a few intermittent, small embedded rocks and occasional shallow, muddy ruts that can hold water after seasonal weather. To easily protect your undercarriage in the final, bumpier quarter mile, simply reduce your speed, pick smooth lines that straddle the shallow puddles, and allow your suspension to comfortably absorb the uneven gravel.
