Trail Overview

Mirror Lake Trail (FS 26E216) is not just a trail; it is a reputation. Often cited as one of the hardest 4x4 trails in California, this high-alpine route is a hardcore test of machine and nerve. Branching off the Strawberry Lake Trail, the route lures you in with a mellow start before slamming you into "Winch Hill," a notorious obstacle maintained by the Lock and Low 4WD Club. From there, the trail is a relentless assault of technical, off-camber boulder fields and massive granite ledges. The descent to the lake is treacherous, but the real challenge is the climb back out--a steep, loose ascent so difficult that steel winch points have been drilled directly into the granite because so many vehicles fail to make it under their own power. The reward at the bottom is the pristine Mirror Lake, offering a stunning campsite to lick your wounds, swim, and fish before facing the brutal exit.

Difficulty

This trail earns a 7 rating because it is virtually impossible for a standard "built" rig to complete without assistance or extreme capability. Front and rear lockers, a winch, and at least 35-inch tires are mandatory minimums. The obstacles include "Winch Hill" and steep, loose rock gardens where traction is non-existent. The trail sign explicitly warns that many vehicles go down but cannot get back up without being towed or winched. The presence of permanent steel winch anchors drilled into the rock is the ultimate testament to the trail's severity. It requires a spotter, recovery gear, and zero fear of body damage.
