Strawberry Lake Trail (FS 26E314) is a trail that lures you in with a smile before baring its teeth. Departing from the Sand Flats Staging Area, the route begins deceptively mellow, offering a gentle warm-up as you cruise toward the intersection with the Mirror Lake Trail (FS 26E216). However, once you start the ascent toward West Lake, the gloves come off. The trail tightens significantly, twisting through a dense forest where large boulder fields and narrow gaps between trees create a technical gauntlet. Full-size rigs beware: this section is a tight squeeze where body damage is a real possibility. The challenge peaks on the final climb from West Lake up to Strawberry Lake. This segment creates a mandatory 4-Low environment, featuring loose rock, chunky boulder fields, and technical granite steps and slabs. It’s a precision drive that rewards a short wheelbase and a steady hand with a pristine alpine lake payoff.

The climb to Strawberry Lake features large, loose boulder fields and granite slab steps that require 4WD Low-Range, high clearance, and aggressive tire placement to avoid getting hung up. Equally challenging is the trail's width; the tight turns between stout trees and large rocks make it a nightmare for long-wheelbase or full-width vehicles. It requires a vehicle that is nimble, armored, and capable of climbing loose, rocky grades.
