Trail Overview
Lake Hughes Truck Trail is an ideal route for beginner offroaders and scenic cruisers looking for a straightforward dirt drive with sweeping views of the Leona and Antelope Valleys. Starting just east of Lake Hughes in remote northern Los Angeles County, California, this 3.3-mile trail climbs from an elevation of approximately 3,271 feet up to 4,076 feet. Along this steady ascent, the track provides an uncomplicated connection to the Tule Divide trail. The terrain consists mostly of unpaved surfaces, featuring smooth dirt sections that can easily be navigated by stock high-clearance vehicles, making it a perfect quick escape into the foothills without the need for highly built rigs.
Despite its overall mild nature and a low technical rating of 3, drivers should remain alert for occasional ruts, washouts, and loose rocks that can accumulate after seasonal rainstorms. While these minor obstacles typically do not require four-wheel-drive under dry conditions, having extra traction is always a benefit when negotiating the looser, steeper sections of the climb. The trail is wide enough to accommodate most standard off-road vehicles, including SxSs, dirt bikes, and stock SUVs. Visitors should plan for warm, dry conditions during the summer months and check local conditions before heading out, as winter rains can occasionally alter the trail's surface.
