Trail Overview

This is a short but challenging dirt and gravel trail from San Francisquito Canyon Road to the remainder of the USFS roads in the vicinity of Grass Mountain. This trail is historic in nature as the south portal of the Los Angeles Aqueduct's Elizabeth Tunnel is sealed, but clearly visible from the south end of the trail. From the north end of the trail, views of the Tejon Ranch and the Tehachapi Mountains are visible. Access to the Pacific Crest Trail (hiking only) is easy as the intersection with the USFS roads is right there, and other attractions such as Grass Mountain are nearby.

Difficulty

This trail is not well maintained and may have deep ruts requiring the driver to straddle. A high-clearance 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Additionally, snow and/or ice may be present in winter months, so caution must be taken.

Trail was great! It was a great drive. Some great views of huge trees. There was two spots with a bit of muddy but nothing crazy. Definitely doing it again but making a left on the fork and doing that route!

I was hoping for that blue trail, but the worst it got was something an Element could do. I would call it an easy green.

This trail was short and easy.. for a 4x4 with off road tires at least. It might be presented as a challenge for AWD and 2WD vehicles. There was lots of loose gravel and some ruts requiring a bit of articulation but nothing say a stock 4runner can't do. overall there are some nice views the higher you get and it is a good gateway from easy and simple fire roads to something with a bit more.

We drove our JLU Rubicon with 37” tires in 4-Low and had no issues. Did not use lockers but aired down to 20 lbs and disconnected sway bar to handle the larger ruts and loose rocks better.

Great trail with a fun combination of easy driving, some medium-easy obstacles, and nice views. Some areas would be borderline too rough for 2WD vehicles. My 04 LJ with 33s did fine. The southern entrance of the trail looks like it is marked as private property, but the sign does not apply to the trail.

Great trail ride, some deep ruts where you will need to straddle. Clear trail and no one else out on this day. This was right after the rain so the trail was wet and a little muddy in spots but more than manageable. There are a few spots to turn around although tight in a short wheel base full size K5.
