Trail Overview

Horse Meadow Creek FS 22S04 departs from Highway M504 and cuts through a large pine forest within Sequoia National Forest, reaching Horse Meadow a couple of miles in. The meadow provides a natural destination and a pleasant open contrast to the dense pine forest along the approach. Dispersed camping spots are available along the route for those looking to overnight in the area. Evidence of the 2021 Windy Fire is present along the trail.

Difficulty

Ruts, off-camber sections, and drainage humps appear throughout the route. The hard-packed dirt surface becomes slippery when wet, amplifying the challenge of the off-camber sections in particular. The small water crossings are generally minor but can deepen significantly after storms and warrant caution in those conditions.

Dusty

Easy trail, but very dusty. The scenery is a bit depressing since it’s all Windy Fire burn scar territory. Between the burnt trees and dust I’ll pass in the future. I can see what it once was and that makes me sad. Blair Witch vibes now. Maybe better in the spring? Not a 3, more like a 2 with a few ruts and tight spots that a full size truck would struggle to get through.

Surprisingly fun, south bit was pretty dusty, good obstacles and ruts to deal with on the north side, gets narrow at parts so expect some stripes. 2 water crossings but they are essentially puddles this time of year.
