Trail Overview

Redwood Meadow FS 22S13 departs from Highway M90 and drops nearly 300 feet over just over a mile, serving as a connector trail to the Long Meadow Campground Loop. The trail cuts through a couple of small creek crossings and passes through an area with active tree cleanup underway following the 2016 Meadow Forest Fire. The nearby Trail of 100 Giants is a must-visit for anyone in the area, offering a stunning old-growth sequoia experience just a short distance away. Black bears are active in this area and should be watched for throughout the area. There are beautiful wildflowers to find in season.

Difficulty

Uneven terrain, ruts, and off-camber sections appear throughout the single-vehicle-wide trail. The hard-packed dirt surface becomes very muddy when wet, significantly increasing difficulty and making the off-camber sections particularly demanding. The small creek crossings add variability depending on season and recent rainfall. Trees in past forest fire areas can be unstable; they can fall at any time.

History

Trail of 100 Giants is one of the best examples of Giant Sequoias in Sequoia National Forest (outside of the main Sequoia National Park). The grove is pretty hard to get to, but it is a beautiful spot. Even the drive to the grove from Kernville is an excellent example of the diverse California landscape. The 1.5-mile trail takes you past 30 massive trees, with the largest having a 70-foot circumference. It’s definitely one of my favorite groves outside of the California National Parks.

Aired down at the large sequoia near the entrance and ran the trail in a Bronco Badlands. Currently much easier than the 6/10 rating suggests. Mostly a scenic forest road with a few muddy sections but no major obstacles. A downed tree blocks the trail near the end, preventing completion. Fortunately, there is an easy turnaround spot just before the blockage. Not worth the drive as a destination trail by itself, but fun if you’re already in the area. 4x4 recommended, especially when wet. I would not run it solo in a 2WD vehicle.
