Trail Overview

Hartley Spur Trail is a fun, bi-directional route with a classic Mammoth-area character. The trail follows a generally flowing line through the pine forest, with steady elevation changes and few tight turns or switchbacks. Its width varies from narrow singletrack to broader, more open sections, creating subtle changes in terrain and pacing. Riders should watch for low overhead obstacles, including fallen and leaning trees. Although enjoyable on its own, Hartley Spur can also be combined with nearby trails and fire roads to create a longer loop.

Difficulty

The trail surface throughout the Mammoth area is primarily loose volcanic pumice. Although it behaves similarly to sand, pumice has a distinct feel and can shift unpredictably beneath the tires. Maintaining steady momentum, smooth throttle control, and a balanced riding position will help riders manage the reduced traction.
