Trail Overview

This 6.25-mile point-to-point trail, part of the June to Mammoth Loop, starts at Highway 395 and ends at Obsidian Loop (FS 2S79). The trail surface consists of pumice and sand, which is very dusty throughout the route, reducing visibility, especially when traveling with other vehicles. Drivers will encounter many off-camber sections, ruts, washboards, and bank turns throughout the journey, creating a technically demanding and varied driving experience. Some large rocks up to 12 inches appear along the route, along with embedded rocks reaching up to 18 inches tall in certain sections, requiring careful line selection and vehicle clearance. Lots of whoops add to the challenging surface conditions, testing suspension and requiring speed management throughout. Some sections narrow significantly onto a shelf road featuring additional obstacles, though these challenging portions reward drivers with great views of the surrounding valleys and mountains. Given the combination of large embedded rocks, narrow shelf sections, and technical surface conditions, 4x4 and high clearance vehicles are highly recommended for a safe and comfortable experience on this route.
