Trail Overview

Greenhorn Mountain West (FS 26S01) cuts through dense pine forest within Sequoia National Forest, running along a shelf road with views of the valley below and surrounding mountaintops. The tree canopy is thick throughout, with overgrown low-hanging branches making frequent contact with taller vehicles and tight tree corridors requiring careful navigation in sections. A gate is present on the trail and must be closed after passing through. A notable moment on the trail comes at a small rock obstacle where the route crosses a water crossing and climbs directly up a hill immediately after, stacking two challenges in quick succession.

Difficulty

The trail is fairly smooth overall but presents ruts, drainage humps, and off-camber sections throughout, all under 12 inches. The low-hanging branches and tight tree corridors add a consistent challenge for taller and wider vehicles. The water crossing, followed by an immediate uphill rock obstacle, is the crux of the route. Four wheel drive is recommended, and low-clearance vehicles are not suitable for this trail.
