Trail Overview

Gold Lake Shore Lower Segment (FS 12M01) picks up where the upper descent ends, leveling out to follow the shoreline of Gold Lake. Once you reach the bottom of the descent, the trail transitions into a series of embedded, sharp rocky features and rock gardens that require a high-clearance vehicle to safely navigate. Along the route, drivers will also encounter water puddles and a rocky water/mud crossing. This area serves as access to the Gold Lake 4x4 Campground. It is a highly popular area with incredible views of the lake and fantastic camping opportunities, though it tends to fill up fast—during this run, all campsites were already taken.

Difficulty

Unlike the steep upper segment, this lower section has a relatively flat elevation profile, hovering between 1,953 and 1,979 meters. However, it earns a solid 3 rating due to the frequent rock gardens, embedded sharp rocks, and muddy water crossings that necessitate careful tire placement and high clearance.

Arrived at dusk and given short trail decided to go for it with full sized 4x4 truck (not lifted). Trail was tight with many segments requiring slow and careful navigation. No issues progressing but was concerned about popping tires or damaging underside of vehicle. Would be much easier with a mid sized vehicle and/or lifted vehicle. Definitely need to air down. Jeeps and 4Runners should he easier.
