Trail Overview

Embarking directly from Owens Gorge Road, this scenic through-trail offers a magnificent, mellow journey that eventually links up seamlessly with FS 4S05. As you traverse this welcoming pathway, you will be treated to fantastic, wide-open views along a beautifully forested corridor. The surrounding landscape is a picturesque, calming blend of spaced-out evergreen trees, low-lying green scrub brush, and fascinating, chunky rocky outcrops bordering the shoulders of the road. The driving surface itself is predominantly a sandy, dirt track that winds its way smoothly through the natural contours of the environment. While the surrounding scenery is remarkably peaceful, expansive, and visually stunning under the wide blue skies, the road's texture demands a relaxed, steady momentum. You will easily spend a highly enjoyable hour soaking in the gorgeous vistas and breathing in the crisp, fresh air as you navigate this delightful, nature-filled passage.

Difficulty

A well-deserved difficulty rating of 3 out of 10 is assigned to this route strictly due to its continuously rugged surface. While the dirt road is generally firm, you will encounter a constant, heavy density of embedded rocks scattered throughout the track that require a slow, deliberate pace to prevent tire damage or uncomfortable jolts. Because of this unrelenting rocky texture, upgrading to robust all-terrain tires is highly recommended for added peace of mind. The most notable challenge on the route is a distinct, stepped rock ledge located approximately 1.7 miles in from the start. Conquering this specific ledge in a vehicle with limited ground clearance simply requires thoughtful, careful tire placement. By choosing a smart, strategic line and maintaining a highly controlled crawl, a standard all-wheel-drive system will safely conquer the ledge and the surrounding rocky stretches with absolute success.
