Trail Overview
FS 04S40T is a varied 0.8-mile, two-way, single-lane trail branching off Granite Boulder Scenic Road. It begins as an easy, flat packed-dirt two-track through open sagebrush and scattered pines, suitable for full-size rigs, 4x4s, and AWD vehicles. Around 0.25 miles, dense brush narrows the trail and makes pinstriping likely, with a turnaround available just before the overgrowth. At 0.6 miles, a rocky climb with embedded rocks and mild washouts requires careful tire placement and slow speeds. Keep right after this section to connect with FS 4S116.
Difficulty
This route earns a difficulty rating of 2. The trail begins as a wide, flat dirt road easily manageable by stock AWD vehicles, but becomes more challenging as it progresses. Encroaching brush around 0.25 miles makes pinstriping likely, while a rocky section near 0.6 miles features uneven embedded rocks and mild sandy washouts. Careful line choice and low-speed control are recommended through this section.
