Trail Overview

FS 04S40L is a scenic 0.9-mile, single-lane loop branching off Granite Boulder Scenic Road, marked at the entrance by a brown “04S40” carsonite sign. The sandy dirt two-track winds through open sagebrush, rocky outcroppings, and scattered pines. Around the halfway point, a large fallen pine completely blocks the trail with no safe or legal bypass, currently turning the loop into an out-and-back route.

Difficulty

FS 04S40L has a baseline difficulty rating of 2. It is relatively smooth, with a sandy dirt surface suitable for stock AWD vehicles, Subarus, and full-size 4x4s, though light vegetation may cause minor pinstriping. Currently, a large fallen tree blocks the trail around the halfway point, making the full 0.9-mile loop impassable to standard vehicles and requiring drivers to turn around.
