Trail Overview

Embarking directly off FS 4S54, FS 30E303 immediately presents an adventurous out-and-back journey that ultimately rewards you with a magnificent scenic overlook as it climbs up to above 8600'. The route begins in a relatively open, sweeping desert landscape marked by wooden powerlines and low-lying sagebrush, quickly transitioning into a sandy, silty dirt two-track that winds its way toward the looming, dramatic mountains ahead. As you push further in, the environment shifts drastically as the trail narrows into a heavily overgrown middle corridor thickly lined with vibrant evergreen trees and encroaching brush. After passing through this tight, forested section, the path begins a long, unrelenting hill climb that dominates the remainder of the 2.4-mile ascent. You will encounter steep, challenging grades featuring deeply embedded rocks, loose dirt, and uneven shelves that require absolute focus and steady momentum. Because this track is extremely narrow with absolutely zero safe turnaround spots, you are fully committed to reaching the top once you begin the climb. However, your efforts are handsomely rewarded at the summit with a breathtaking, sweeping view of the valley below before you must carefully retrace your path back down to the start.

Difficulty

Earning a solid difficulty rating of 4 out of 10, this route presents several significant challenges that require careful consideration before attempting. The terrain features steep, unrelenting climbs composed of loose, silty dirt that can easily cause a loss of traction, paired with sections of protruding, jagged embedded rocks that demand precise tire placement. Vehicles with limited ground clearance will face a serious risk of scraping vital undercarriage components on these rocky steps. Furthermore, the heavily overgrown middle section poses a high risk of paint pinstriping, and the complete lack of safe turnaround spaces means you must have the confidence and physical capability to reach the top once you commit to the narrow climb.
