Trail Overview
This fine-dirt trail begins at a large, developed campground with room for hundreds of campers, fifth wheels, and RVs, along with restroom facilities. The first section passes several campsites before continuing into a dense forest where much of the route is fully shaded by tall trees. Expect minor ruts reaching 4–5 inches deep with no significant obstacles. Around 1 mile, the route passes the Crestview Fire Station and nearby buildings, where the posted speed limit is 5 mph. The trail is van- and trailer-friendly, although the fine dirt can become more difficult when wet.
Difficulty
This trail is rated Level 2 because of the minor 4–5-inch ruts and fine-dirt surface. There are no significant obstacles, making it an easy and scenic route for most vehicles, vans, and trailers when dry.
History
Inyo National Forest was established in 1907 and today protects a vast section of the Eastern Sierra surrounding Mammoth Lakes. The area has a long history of Native American use, mining, ranching, and recreation, while volcanic activity, glaciers, and the uplift of the Sierra Nevada shaped its dramatic landscape.
