Trail Overview

This narrow, well-maintained fine-dirt trail leaves the dense forest and enters an open valley with scenic views of the surrounding mountains. There are no significant ruts or obstacles, although the fine-dirt surface can become more difficult when wet. Around 0.3 miles, the trail becomes considerably narrower as it reenters thicker vegetation. Pine trees, branches, and heavy overgrowth encroach on the route, making pinstriping and wheel scratches highly likely beyond this point.

Difficulty

This trail is rated Level 2 because it is well-maintained with no significant obstacles or ruts. However, the narrow terrain and heavy overgrowth beyond 0.3 miles make pinstriping highly likely.

History

Inyo National Forest was established in 1907 and today protects a vast section of the Eastern Sierra surrounding Mammoth Lakes. The area has a long history of Native American use, mining, ranching, and recreation, while volcanic activity, glaciers, and the uplift of the Sierra Nevada shaped its dramatic landscape.
