Trail Overview

This fine-dirt and gravel trail climbs from Sandy Flat into the hills and deeper into dense forest. Ruts begin around 4–6 inches deep, while most straight sections have minimal to no rutting. On turns, ruts increase to 12–14 inches but remain relatively manageable. After approximately 0.1 miles, camping becomes plentiful, with numerous level, shaded campsites offering scenic forest views. The fine-dirt surface can become considerably more difficult when wet.

History

Inyo National Forest was established in 1907 and today protects a vast section of the Eastern Sierra surrounding Mammoth Lakes. The area has a long history of Native American use, mining, ranching, and recreation, while its dramatic landscape was shaped by volcanic activity, glaciers, and the uplift of the Sierra Nevada.
