Trail Overview
This is a point-to-point trail leading from Lockwood Valley Rd to the top of the Frazier Mountain, where there is an old abandoned Lookout Tower and Cellular Commuication structures. From Lockwood Valley Rd, the trail begins as an asphault road as it passes by Forest Service headquarter buildings and heads to the nearby Frazier Mountain trailhead/staging area. At this point, the asphault becomes rough and broken for 2 miles as it winds uphill to the Chuchupate Campground area. At the campground, the trail fully becomes a dirt road and is accessible to off-road vehicles planning to head higher up the mountain. The road surface from this point onward will have small embedded rocks, loose gravel, shallow ruts and occasional exposed tree roots. There are several blind corners, so be aware that there may be vehicles coming in the opposite direction. At multiple places along the route, great scenic views of the area will be possible, especially at the top near the Lookout Tower. Note that the section of trail starting from the Chuchupate Campground is closed annually from 11/2 - 4/30. Off-road vehicles using this trail must have a valid Green Sticker. Tread Lightly and Pack-it-Out.
Difficulty
This road consists of a mix of pavement, broken pavement, gravel, and graded or packed dirt. The first quarter is two lanes wide, while the remaining road is only one vehicle width with infrequent turnouts. In unpaved stretches, there may be shallow ruts and smaller loose rocks. 2WD vehicles with moderate clearance should able to complete the entire route unless rain or light snow create slick conditions.
