Trail Overview

This little-used route provides access to the Cerro Gordo mining ghost town from Death Valley. The route follows White Talc Road from Saline Valley Road in Death Valley, meandering along the valley floor at roughly 5,000 feet, and then climbs steeply up 3,000 feet along the Cerro Gordo Road. This route is mostly rough rock. There is no signal, and other than the occasional ranger patrol along the White Talc road down in the valley (the ranger was surprised to see us), it receives very little use. A portion of this route is in the Death Valley National Park, where all vehicles are required to be street legal. This route is seasonally closed by snow.

We recently completed this route, beginning at Saline Valley Road. As indicated by the trailhead signage, there are no services available along this route. Consistent with recent user reports on ONX Offroad, it’s essential to come fully prepared with a high-clearance vehicle, sufficient fuel, and a reliable spare tire. Conditions and Experience: Road Conditions: The route was extremely rugged, with heavily deteriorated, washboard surfaces. The recent rains have created ruts in the trail, and several fallen rocks were encountered along the way. Wildlife and Views: The area offered exceptional wildlife viewing and scenery. Weather: Temperatures ranged from the mid-70s to low-80s.

The rains have carved out some ruts in the trail, about 2 feet deep. Choose your line carefully, don't be looking at your phone ( like me) and your be alright. We made it worth 33" tires and some good spotting.

Lots of washout areas. Needed HIGH Clearance and skid plates. 35s with lockers in a few areas. Fortunately if you get hung up, there are plenty of trees to winch from. I did not have to winch, but came close in one spot.

Snow, ice, muddy, washed out in many places. Because of the washed out areas, estimate a 7-8 level. Definitely need 35s and lockers in a few spots.
