Trail Overview

Branching off Forest Highway 7, Brownell - FS 21N04 is a rugged, single-track dirt and gravel out-and-back spur climbing steadily along a picturesque mountain flank. Managed by Mendocino National Forest, the high-country terrain displays open chaparral slopes and standing burn snags recovering from the 2020 August Complex Fire, framing panoramic vistas of healthy neighboring ranges. Featuring an unmaintained dirt and loose stone surface with severe washouts and narrow timber squeezes, this challenging path earns a Technical Rating of 3. Early miles wind gently past scenic pullouts, leading to a prime dispersed campsite around 0.4 miles that features an elevated fire ring overlooking valley views to the northeast. Past 0.7 miles, fallen burned trees narrow the corridor, forcing precise maneuvering around cut log ends and rutted side slopes. At 1.6 miles, a major storm washout completely erodes the roadbed, making further travel impossible and requiring a turnaround at the spacious 1.4-mile turnout. Outdoor enthusiasts explore this scenic spur to enjoy quiet backcountry camping, take in breathtaking valley vistas, or experience a technical ridge drive.

Difficulty

Earning a Technical Rating of 3, this unmaintained trail presents significant terrain obstacles including deep erosion ruts, washouts, and tight timber pinch points. Past the 0.7-mile mark, fallen burned trees restrict track width, requiring careful tire placement to clear cut log ends and off-camber soil. At 1.6 miles, severe road erosion has completely swept away the roadbed, creating an impassable gap. High ground clearance and attentive line choices are necessary, with wide-body vehicles requiring extra caution around narrow log squeezes. Drivers must use the turnout near 1.4 miles to turn around safely before reaching the complete road failure.
