Trail Overview
This north-to-south sandy trail starts a mile south of Highway 78 and ends on BLM 085 West. The route is lined with creosote bushes and seasonal wildflowers throughout. You'll enjoy great views of Superstition Mountain and the Anza Borrego Mountains as you navigate. The trail is fairly flat overall, but there are a lot of drop-ins and outs of small washes with lots of ruts, whoops, washboards, and small off-camber sections that will challenge your suspension and get a little bumpy. There are a few sections of deeper sand, so be prepared with good tires and four wheel drive, which are highly recommended. At mile 1.5 coming from the south, you have to drop into a deep, unnamed wash where the remnants of a trailer lost in a flood remain as a stark reminder of flash flood dangers. Follow the second ramp up and then into another wash for the remainder of the trail north. There's a lot of opportunity for dispersed camping in the northern mile of the trail. The north mile follows the electrical pole line for easy reference.
Difficulty
The combination of drop-ins and outs of small washes, lots of ruts, whoops, washboards, and off-camber sections creates a challenging and bumpy ride. The few sections of deeper sand require momentum management and good tires with four wheel drive highly recommended. The deep, unnamed wash at mile 1.5 is a significant obstacle requiring careful descent and climb out. High clearance is beneficial for the washes and ruts.
