Trail Overview

This trail is a rough dirt road with mostly hardpack dirt, gravel, and small-sized rocks. There is some overgrowth, so plan to collect some pinstripes! The overgrowth gets worse as the trail progresses and is severe past the campground. This is an out-and-back trail ending just past the Joe Elliot Yellow Post Sites (camping), past this point, it is permanently gated and impassible even if it was not. There is a good mix of terrain here; some elevation change, forested sections, a bit of exposure, and great views of Mount Baldy and Los Angeles along the way at various pullouts and viewpoints. This would be a good intro to offroading trail and is very close to Los Angeles! You will not need to use 4WD and could probably manage without high clearance.

Difficulty

This can best be described as a rough dirt road. This would be a great intro to offroad trails as there are some sections with hills, but nothing technical.

Trail was closed when I arrived. A look at the FS website shows it’s a seasonal closure.

As of today there is deep snow about 2-3ft at the top ridge of the trail. Also there is a downed tree right past the campground about halfway on the trail before the main ridge. I managed to get through but a full size truck honestly may not fit. Honestly not worth the risk in my opinion. Lots of deep snow along the ridge as well as on the hill climbs. Trail will cause minimal pin stripes at this time. It’s fairly wide at this time but full size truck may honestly get scraped up pretty bad. Some branches are fairly thick. Also I used a locker and 4L today to get through some of the mud and deep snow today. I would say high clearance is a must on this trail. It’s probably a solid 1.5 to 2 as far as difficulty depending on weather. I would say when there is snow the right equipment is key so that would be maybe a 4 or 5 just because of the hill climbs nd deep snow. Please use caution when up here as the road is single lane and there are many blind turns. Please take your time and go slow! Have fun!

2 1/2 hr ride on my ADV bike. Very fun going on dirt, rocks, through some mud puddles and a little ice closer to the summit. The first 1/2 of the road was 1 out of 10, easy… wide enough for 2 4x4’s to pass. Second half had many tight, blind curves, and rocks the size of baseballs. I would rate it a 6 of 10 for my 430 lb bike.

Pretty easy trail. Some small puddles and minor pin striping. Larger trucks may have some issues.

Fun trail with some changing terrain. Some snow patches near the last 8 mile mark. Be warned that you will have scratches due to thick and tall brush pass.

Simple trail, no 4x4 needed. Tight for full size trucks, lots of pin striping. Some small water puddles, 3-6 ft wide. Keep watch for oncoming vehicles, difficult to pass at times. Nice views up top.

Easy, a few rutts and a couple of semi deep puddles when I went. Great view of the valley. Last part of the trail gets very narrow and you will get moderate to severe pinstripes. If you're in a smaller truck like a first gen Tacoma you should be fine.

Tail is relatively easy and seemed unaffected by the recent rain. Any 4x4 with decent clearance could handle this. Other people we saw on the trail were hunting. Trail gets very narrow at the end and you will scratch your car on brush.
