Trail Overview
This fine-dirt trail begins with a steep climb up and over the hillside through dense forest. Ruts reach 4–5 inches deep, and several sections are wide enough for vehicles to pass. The combination of steep climbs, descents, and very soft dirt makes 4WD or AWD highly recommended. Overall, this is a scenic forest route without significant rock or clearance obstacles. The soft surface can become considerably more difficult when wet, especially on the steeper grades.
Difficulty
This trail is rated Level 3 because of the steep hill climbs and descents, 4–5-inch ruts, and very soft dirt that can reduce traction. 4WD or AWD is highly recommended, particularly in wet conditions.
History
Inyo National Forest was established in 1907 and today protects a vast section of the Eastern Sierra surrounding Mammoth Lakes. The area has a long history of Native American use, mining, ranching, and recreation, while volcanic activity, glaciers, and the uplift of the Sierra Nevada shaped its dramatic landscape.
