Trail Overview

Beckwourth - NF23N03 is an ideal introductory route for four-wheel-drive vehicles, SxSs, and high-clearance rigs looking to access the sprawling network of forest service roads on Beckwourth Mountain. Starting right outside of Portola, California, at an elevation of 4,875 feet, this 3.45-mile dirt and gravel road serves as a primary gateway into the Plumas National Forest. The route features a modest 1,114 feet of elevation gain with a technical rating of 3, making it generally approachable for most stock four-wheel-drive vehicles, though a couple of steep, loose climbs with a maximum gradient of nearly 20 degrees will require shifting into a low range. Because this Forest Service road is seldom maintained, travelers should expect to navigate tight spots where manzanita overgrowth is reclaiming the trail, making pinstriping highly likely for wider vehicles. The track winds through pine forests and open slopes, offering scenic views as it climbs to a peak elevation of 5,968 feet. From its terminus, offroaders can connect to a larger network of trails climbing over 7,000 feet, which means access is highly seasonal and dependent on winter snowpack. Be sure to air down for traction on the gravelly sections and watch for changing weather conditions when exploring the higher elevations of the mountain.
