Trail Overview

Bald Rush is a serious contender for one of the most engaging technical trails in the Bald Mountain network. It’s not just a drive; it’s a full-body workout for your suspension. The trail tread is a classic Sierra cocktail of dirt, sand, and decomposed granite (DG), but the main event is the relentless series of granite rock slab obstacles. From small ledges to large, complex boulder climbs, this route keeps you busy. The scenery is equally dramatic, with the trail winding through a healthy, open pine forest before breaking out onto massive, exposed granite slabs that offer expansive views of the valley below. Key stops include a broad rock formation perfect for a lunch break with a view (see photos). Be warned: this is a technical driver’s trail where line choice is everything.

Difficulty

This trail earns a hard Rating 6 due to the frequency and severity of the rock obstacles. While some sections are a moderate Rating 3, the trail is defined by mandatory challenges like the "Off-Camber Hill", a tilting slab climb with multiple off-camber ledges that offers no bypass and demands precise wheel placement to avoid a flop. Other features like the "Ledges" obstacle require significant suspension articulation, high clearance, and excellent approach/departure angles. Differentials will likely scrape, and sliders and skid plates are highly recommended. This is not a trail for stock vehicles or inexperienced drivers.

This is a really fun, challenging trail that has a little bit of everything. Be warned, there is a substantial large shelf to either drop down or crawl up around the middle of the trail. We recorded 38° decline with two bronco raptors that took the challenge. There’s also a bypass, which is almost as difficult, and is greatly more off camber. this is without a doubt the main obstacle to be of concern for running this trail. Otherwise there’s a few squeezes, off camber, sections, V notches, etc.. very fun trail, but be prepared with your rig and mentally for the challenges.
