Trail Overview

Don't let the name fool you—Plain (FS 26E211) is anything but boring. This delightful connector trail serves as a scenic bridge between the popular Bald Mountain (FS 26E219) route and the more technical Basecamp (FS 26E328) trail. The drive is a quintessential High Sierra experience, featuring a dynamic mix of surfaces that keep things interesting. You'll float over sections of soft, sandy decomposed granite (DG) before climbing onto massive, grippy granite slabs that feel like nature's own pavement. The trail winds through a healthy, open forest of red fir and Jeffrey pine, offering dappled shade and plenty of spots to pull over and soak in the silence. It’s not just a transit road; it’s a fun, rhythmic drive with small ledges and rock gardens that provide just enough engagement to keep you smiling without white-knuckling the steering wheel. It is important to note that portions of this trail were impacted by the 2020 Creek Wildfire. Be prepared to encounter fallen snags.

Difficulty

This trail earns a solid Rating 3 because it steps it up a notch from a simple gravel road. Drivers will encounter minor rock obstacles and granite ledges that require a bit more clearance and line choice than a standard fire road. While there are no massive boulders to crawl over, the uneven transition between dirt and rock can cross up stock suspensions. High clearance is recommended to avoid scraping skid plates on the embedded rocks, and 4WD is helpful for controlling traction on the loose decomposed granite climbs. It's the perfect intermediate trail for a relaxed afternoon.
