Trail Overview

A 5-mile stretch of connecting forest service roads. It is a particularly useful trail if you are driving a non street legal vehicle and camping at Black Springs or off of 7N23. The trail features a rocky climb and descent with a few smoother fast sections along Bailey Ridge as well as a few good views. Note this trail is over 7,000 feet and is generally impassable in the winter season and is subject to winter road closures as managed by the forest service. Generally this trail is open July through October.

Difficulty

The trail is very easy, any high clearance 4x4 will be fine, but the descent/climb on the 7N09 side is a bit tight for some SUVs.

It was mostly easy, but there were a few challenging areas. Drove most of the trial in 2H, there are 3-4 sections that were a bit challenging, harder for longer vehicles as there was a switchback section.

Started on the east side. The first climbing section was wide open but very loose. Good traction control and / or rear locker was needed. The rest of the trail was a rutted out dirt road with some loose rocks here and there. Look out for cows on the trail. Calling it a 3 because of the beginning section.

Big downed tree across the trail just before 7n09, trail was clear from bottom up until that. No chainsaw so had to make our own path around.

This trail is not a 1/2 currently. Numerous downed trees across the trail. Had to get out the chain saw and 4L over many tree stumps. A lot of going off trail to get around all the fallen trees but FUN! This should be upgraded to a 4/5. Trail itself is maybe a 2/3 at best in places but most is 4/5. A few boulder obstructions to squeeze through. Good exposure to creating your own trails between trees. Good fun for those who love that type of experience!

Trail had large rocks and narrow trail after turned off Black Springs Road. This is far more than a 2. I had a stock 2024 Jeep Wrangler and decided no way. More like a hard 3 or 4.

As others said, the end points are the toughest parts. From the west there is a big boulder seemingly blocking the path but you can go around it. On the east side there are some good drop offs so go slow and mind your tire placement. Nice and quiet, and very dusty, otherwise.

I did this trail in a stock 2018 Tundra trd, and approached from the east end. Tires (KO2's) aired down to 18 psi. While it's true that most of the trail is a 2, that narrow, rutted, rocky, twisty climb up from the forest road is a 4 in my book. Never in danger of not making it, but a bit of a challenge. Just beware if in a full size vehicle.

Beautiful side trip on the way to Lake Alpine. The trail was dry, but not dusty. Wildflowers are in full bloom. The first 50 yard and the last 50 yards are the only mildly technical parts of the trail, only a high 1 of 10 on those sections. Your Prius won’t make it.
