Trail Overview

This is a point-to-point single-track trail connecting the Tejon Trail to the top of Frazier Mountain near the old Lookout Tower. It is designated "Most Difficult" by the Forest Service, which is warranted since it climbs 2000 feet in a short 2 miles. Trail use is restricted to dirt bikes only by narrow entry gates on both ends. The riding surface is primarily dirt but has long stretches of loose rocks, especially on a number of the steeper grade sections. In many places the trail exists as a narrow shelf track with steep hillsides on both sides, making turning around difficult. The combination of steep grades, loose rocks and a narrow shelf track make this a serious ride requiring high focus and a smart line. In the lower section, there are flat stretches with lots of whoops, embedded rocks and exposed tree roots. In the upper section, there are several switchbacks, one of which has a short boulder field and ruts. Trees are present frequently along the entire route, which provide shady resting spots to catch your breath, grab a drink, and enjoy the great elevated scenery. However, areas wide enough to pull aside and let other riders pass are much less frequent, especially in the upper section. Dispersed camping is allowed next to the trail, but there are not many places that are very accommodating for a campsite. Green stickers are required on dirt bikes. The trail is closed annually from 11/2 to 4/30. Cell phone service is available in the area. Tread Lightly and Pack-it-Out.

Difficulty

The combination of loose rocks, long grades, and narrow track on a steep hillside makes this a challenging ride, especially when traveling from the south end uphill. In this direction, the trail will gain 2000 feet of elevation over a 2-mile span. In the stretches where the trail surface is comprised of loose rock on a shelf road, be careful about riding close to the edge as the rocks will easily shift and give way. This is a trail for experienced riders and should be ridden along with others in case of any mishaps on the trail.
