Trail Overview
16S08 Fred Canyon Road is a 6.1-mile point-to-point trail rated 3 of 10 located within the Cleveland National Forest, Descanso Ranger District. This trail is usually run in conjunction with Fred Canyon to create a 14.2-mile point-to-point trail. It's generally considered a moderately challenging route. This trail is great for off-road driving, and it's unlikely you'll encounter many other people while exploring. Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash. The trail starts just east of the Cibbets Flat Campground gate. A National Parks Adventure Pass is required if the vehicle is parked along this trail. Approximately 0.8 miles from the access gate, the trail crosses the Pacific Crest Trail which stretches from the Mexican to the Canadian borders. The trail is a typical graded forest road that continues to climb for 6 miles. The top of the trail intersects with the La Posta Truck Trail which will go back downhill to the Interstate. Cell phone service is intermittent. The nearest services are either east or west along Interstate 8.
Difficulty
The trail consists of loose rocks, dirt, and sand with some slick rock surfaces. Mud holes are possible, but there are no steps higher than 12 inches. 4WD may be required, and aggressive tires are a plus.
